Today has been a very full day of activities. We went into a small town called La Crete, a hamlet community just 40 minutes away from the reserve. In La Crete, Karmy and I alongside a community member went to a greenhouse named Rustic Roots. Here, we spent some time collecting various plants including fruit plants and trees. It was very beautiful to see lots of flowers in bloom. Karmy and I may go back there in our free time to get a couple flowers to make the fire hall look cuter and more homey.
After heading back to the reserve to drop off the plants at the community center in Child Lake, we drove into High Level to go to Canadian Tire and get more plants for the community garden and some soil. Karmy and I also used this opportunity to go to the grocery store to get some more groceries as we were running low. It felt amazing to have been able to get off the reserve and to spend some quality time with the community member. We had many talks about the community, their life experiences, and what they would like to see happen in the community.
While this was a very full day, what made this day even better was the access to a vehicle, a vehicle provided by the reserve. This vehicle will be the vehicle that both Karmy and I will be using for the summer. As we sat at our table having a snack, Karmy and I both were thinking about going for a drive around the community to see what we could see. Getting access to the car felt freeing, especially after not having access to a car for the past two weeks. Karmy drove first and we went to Fort Vermillion, a town that is 20 minutes away from the reserve. While in Fort Vermillion, we spent some time sitting at park benches by the Peace River, talking about our day and taking photos and resisted buying homemade ice cream. I then drove us back to the fire hall and then sat down to talk with my family and share my day with them.
