The week leading up to the IRS Commemoration was full of preparation. On Tuesday, Karmy and I opened up the Rocky Lane ag hall for those who were interested in taking a 3 day long trappers course. As we were sitting there helping people fill out registration forms, the instructor of the course was speaking about the course and made both Karmy and I want to take the course. But of course, we could not partake in the course as we had very full plates, full of things that needed to be done.

After everyone at the ag hall was settled, Karmy and I headed off to the Child Lake community center (also known as the clcc) to help start making swag bags for the event. Included in these swag bags were keychains, papers explaining the background of Indian residential schools and who the artist was for the statue, a orange t-shirt, hand sanitizer and pens. We made over 300 bags that day but ran out of some of the supplies, so had to stop that day. We eventually finished the bags later on in the week. After making the swag bags, we headed back to Boyer for another meeting that was being held to discuss what still needed to be done before the event. It was learned during this meeting that there was still quite a bit of stuff that needed to be accomplished before the event. During this meeting, we had pizza and donuts (this was just the start of a week full of meetings and free food!)
Once our meeting was concluded that day, Karmy and I were tasked with the hanging of the posters around the community. It was during this time that we encountered a cow standing right next to the fence all by itself. It turns out that both Karmy and I really like cows (it must be a city thing!) and decided that we must take pictures of this cow. This is not the only animal that was spotted this day. Later on that night, out of the corner of my eye in the bathroom, something moves. It was a frog! Of all things, a frog was just hanging out in the bathroom.

The following day was another day spent out at the clcc. We were initially there for another meeting but the meeting was delayed because it was said that meetings can not happen until everyone has eaten. Eventually, after everyone had eaten their lunch, we had the meeting and then finished making the swag bags. Leah, our supervisor, took us to La Crete after the meeting to get door prizes for the bingo that was happening during the weekend. This was a very long day full of exciting tasks and was by far our longest day that we have experienced since coming to BFN.
The day before the event was very much the same as the others this week. After a morning spent scrambling to find a ride back to the clcc, a community member offered to drive both Karmy and I as they had time to do so. Upon getting to the center, we started setting up bagged lunches for the students who would be coming the next day for the commemoration. After setting up the bagged lunches, another community member let Karmy and I drive a tractor for the first time. This was a lot of fun! The community member who drove us up to the center kindly took Karmy and I to High Level to get Iced Capps from Tim Hortons before driving us back to the loft. On the drive back to the loft, the community member told us a lot of stories about his life. I was grateful that the community member felt comfortable with us sharing his story with us.
After a long week full of exciting activities, it was time for Karmy and I to get our rest as it would be an early morning the next morning.
