On the morning of Tuesday, May 17, 2022, Karmy and I alongside Maggie, the Engage North program coordinator, headed into High Level to get accustomed to our area. The drive to High Level from Beaver First Nation is a 40 minute drive where all you can see around you is farmer’s fields. Upon reaching High Level, we first went to a Canadian Tire to get some keys cut for the loft above the firehall. After spending some time in the Canadian Tire, Maggie took us on a small tour of the area, pointing out some important businesses that may become important for Karmy and I. It was during this tour that I spotted a Starbucks, a new addition to High Level. Unfortunately, it was not open as it is in the finishing stages (this may be a good thing as I don't want to spend all of my hard earned money on Starbucks this summer.)

After our tour of High Level, we went to Denny’s for brunch and had a lovely time chatting with each other about various things, including talking about our families. Upon having full bellies, we were onto our next adventure, the grocery store. Karmy and I walked up and down every aisle and spent over 2 hours in the grocery store. Because this was our first trip getting groceries for the summer, we had to get the essentials that we would only need to get at the beginning of our time here. Once we had purchased all of our groceries, we loaded into the car and went back to our loft to put our groceries away before having a meet and greet at the Beaver First Nation Administrative Office. Unfortunately, we arrived after 4PM and did not get to meet a lot of people.

Later that evening, Andrew and Kylie took Karmy and I on a tour of the area. We got to see the gardens that were built last year, the farm that is currently raising cattle and the local gym (might spend some time here!!) After having a tour of the area, we went into Fort Vermillion and got Ice Cream. The ice cream was delicious and nice to have a sweet treat after a day full of excitement. We returned home with bellies full of ice cream and attempted to move 2 dressers into the loft. While they were heavy, the combination of 4 people carrying the dressers made for easy work. It is with these dressers that I was able to fully unpack all of my belongings and make my room feel like home. As I went to bed, I was full of dread knowing that Maggie, Andrew and Kylie were heading home, leaving Karmy and I here in a place that is so far away from home. Having Andrew and Kylie here for the first few days made the transition easier and am very appreciative for them spending their time with us.
