It is safe to say that I have not yet adjusted to the relaxed timing that many people here at BFN (Beaver First Nation) follow. Coming from Edmonton where being on time is very different to the relaxed timing that those here follow. Karmy and I experienced this on May 24 when we were asked to meet at the health center at 11:00 Am. We then precited to wait for an hour and a half for the community member to make it to the health center. While this may seem to be a long time to wait, it was an opportunity for Karmy and I to talk with many community members who walked into the health center.
The reason why we were to meet up at the community center was to help sort the seeds that we had collected the following day. These seeds are getting bagged up and sent to those in the community who need/want them. Karmy and I spent the entire day making 55 bags that are full of various seeds that will be sent to both those is Child Lake and those in Boyer. It seems that everyone here has a garden or are in the process of making a garden.
Halfway through our day, we were given gifts from a community member, welcoming us and thanking us for the hard work that we were doing. These gifts included a box of popcorn (mine is pink), a 2022 planner that was specifically made for the BFN community and a pen that goes along with the planner. A highlight of the day was when we were told that there was a free lunch being provided at the administration building and that we had to take a break and eat (I could not say no to free food!) There was hot dogs, hamburgers, macaroni salad, wings as well as soda and pink lemonade. Karmy and I sat outside to eat and enjoy the nice weather that was not too hot and not too cold. A nice day with a slight breeze. After eating our lovely lunch, we went back to the health center to finish packing up the bags of seeds before we went back to the fire hall to make dinner and enjoy the rest of our evening. It is safe to say that both Karmy and I were very tired after a long day of hard work.
*Pictures is a gifts that were given to us by community members and picture 2 is an example of how the bags of seeds looked like for those in the community.
