As I woke up early on May 18, 2022, I knew that there would be some changes as this was the day that Maggie, Andrew, and Kylie left for home. While I am excited to start my experience here in Beaver First Nation, it is now only Karmy and myself. Before Andrew and Kylie left for home, they took us to the health center to meet more people from the community. While this was supposed to be a meet and greet, it quickly turned into an assembly line of putting food into bags. In a community 2 hours west from here is a community named Chateh. Currently, this community is experiencing a flood and are not allowed to be in their community. Much of the community is in High Level while they wait for the approval to return home. As they wait, the Beaver First Nation has decided that they are going to provide some food to the Elders and some of the women of the community.
During our time helping create these bags, Karmy and I got to speak and listen to some individuals from the community. One memorable person was an addiction counselor who told us her life story. I am grateful for her time as she welcomed us into the community as well as welcomed us into her space. I will always remember this interaction as it made me feel welcomed into a community which is so very far from where I am from. For the rest of the day, I spent some time getting to know Karmy as well as getting more comfortable in my new home, putting everything into their correct places (I may have also had a small nap!) While I enjoy busy days, it is nice to have slow days which allow us to recuperate from the past two jam packed days full of activities.
